Life

Nicolas of Narbonne or the Frenchman was the Prior General of the young Carmel between 1266 and 1271. Before that, he lived as a hermit, perhaps also on Mount Carmel. After writing the letter Fiery Arrow, he stepped down as the General of the Order. The date of his death is unknown, possibly it was in the hermitage in Saint-Hilaire de Ménerbes in the Luberon mountains in southern France. Contemplative life is in constant danger of becoming about ourselves and losing sight of God. For this reason, the question kept arising in Carmel for the contemplative focus to be reassessed, along with a necessity for ‘reform’, that is, for a return to the total concentration on God in every activity and every form of life. In 1270, Nicholas accordingly makes an appeal to Carmelites to consider their lives as the School of Love in a process of discernment.

First Encounter

The Solitary Cell

Bij de profeet Isaias lezen we: ‘Ezechias toonde hen een geurig vertrek, een voorraadkamer van goud, zilver en heerlijk geurende reukwerken.’ En dit alles, ja zelfs nog meer, wordt ons op geestelijke wijze door onze Ezechias getoond in de eenzame cel. En door de Koning der koningen binnengevoerd in zijn wijnkelder, zullen we in ons een welgeordende liefde verkrijgen. Hoe goed past deze beeldspraak voor onze cel! Want in deze cel maakt de H. Geest de ware kloosterlingen dronken met de wondere wijn van de godsvrucht, en schenkt Hij hen de heerlijke sluimering van een zoete contemplatie.

De wereld gaat open

In de eenzaamheid staan wij onder de goedgunstige be­scherming van alle elementen. Het firmament in zijn wonderlijke ordening van sterren en planeten trekt ons aan door zijn schoonheid en nodigt ons uit om het hogere te bewonderen. Vogels met een engelennatuur zingen hun zoete melodie tot onze troost. Van de bergen druppelt ons, volgens de profetie van Jesaja, een heerlijke zoetheid toe; en van de heuvels die ons gezelschap vormen, vloeit melk en honing, die de dwaze minnaars van deze wereld niet kunnen smaken.

Een grote lofzang

Wanneer we de lof van de Schepper zingen, stemmen de omringende bergen, onze broeders, eensluidend met ons in. Gelijk opgaand met onze stemmen tokkelen zij als het ware zacht hun citer en doen fijne muziek in de lucht weerklinken om de Heer te prijzen. Jonge loten schieten uit, het gras is fris groen, de bomen met hun loof zijn op hun wijze blij en juichen ons toe; en ook de wonderschone bloemen, die overvloedig hun heerlijke geur verspreiden, lachen ons eenzamen – bij wijze van troost – vriendelijk toe.

Lof van de Schepper

De lichten, die niet kunnen praten, spreken tot ons als het ware toch hun heilzame vermaningen. De braamstruiken geven ons schaduw en doen ons genieten van hun weldadige aanwezigheid, en alle schepselen die wij in de eenzaamheid zien en horen, verkwikken en versterken ons, die in hun gezelschap verke­ren. Ja zelfs wanneer zij stilzwijgen, verkondigen zij nog wondere dingen en wekken ons innerlijk op tot lof aan de Schepper.
