Thomas Hemerken was born in 1379/1380 in Kempen (Nordrhein-Westfalen in present-day Germany) as the youngest of two children. About the year 1393, he departed for Deventer, where he received education at the chapter school of Saint Lebuin and became familiar with the spiritual movement of Modern Devotion. Florens Radewijns accepted him into his community of Brothers of the Common Life. In 1399, he entered the monastery of Agnietenberg in Zwolle, where his brother had just become prior. This community belonged to the Windesheim chapter of this movement. In 1407, he became a fully fledged canon and in 1413 or 1414, he received priestly ordination. In 1425, he was elected as novice master for a few years, and that office can be recognized in many of his writings, such as in the Sermons for the Novices. From 1420 to 1441, he worked on the Imitation of Christ, a timeless book that points us the way to God in a very down to earth and practical manner. This book has often been read in a very ascetic and negative way, but in fact it carries us along in a mystical movement of complete surrender to God, so that we are increasingly clothed with Christ. With the exception of the period between 1429 and 1432, when he lived first in Ludingakerke in Friesland and then in Arnhem, he remained in the monastery of Agnietenberg until his death in 1471.
