Dag Hammarskjöld era nato in 1905 a Jönköping in Svezia. Era il figlio minore di una vecchia famiglia nobile svedese. Il suo padre Hjalmar Hammarskjöld era nel periodo 1914-1917 il primo ministro di Svezia. Studiava a Uppsala Storia della letteratura, filosofia, francese e economia. La Completava un dottorato a ventisette anni. Il 7 aprile 1953 è stato eletto segretatio generale delle Nazioni Unite su proposta del Consiglio della Sicurezza (31 marzo). Nella notte di 17-18 settembre 1961 faceva un ultimo tentativo per raggiungere un accordo nella crisi in Congo. A questo scopo volava verso il territorio neutrale a Ndola. Però l’aereo è schiantato prima dell’atterraggio. Dag Hammarskjöld ha perso la vita in questo contesto. Secondo lui l’atteggiamento di Gesù è caratterizzato da fermezza. Qualsiasi siano le implicazioni per lui. Gesù rimaneva fedele alla sua destinazione. A questo proposito la vita di Gesù serve da modello per ogni uomo chi vuole vivere la sua vocazione. La vocazione richiede abbandono, perché soltanto così possiamo entrare in contatto con la sorgente divina.

Abbandono alla vita

Un giovane uomo, duro nella sua devozione alla vita. Chi gli fu più vicino, racconta dell’ultima sera quando si alzò da tavola, depose le vesti e lavò i piedi dei commensali e discepoli; un giovane, duro, solo davanti al suo destino ultimo. Aveva notato il gioco meschino per ottenere la sua amicizia, la sua! Sapeva che nessuno dei commensali aveva capito il perché del suo agire in quel modo. Capiva come si sarebbero spaventati, come avrebbero dubitato… E uno di loro lo aveva denunciato e avrebbe ben presto dato il segnale alle guardie.

Abbandono alla morte

Hij had ingezet op een mogelijkheid in zijn wezen en bestemming die hij voorvoeld had toen hij terugkwam uit de woestijn. Als God iets met hem voorhad, dan zou hij niet verzaken. Pas sinds kort had hij gemeend helderder te zien en begreep hij dat de weg van de mogelijkheid die van het lijden kon zijn. Hij wist echter ook dat hij hem moest volgen, twijfelend of hij was “degene die -” maar wetend dat het antwoord alleen gewonnen kon worden door hem te volgen. Het einde kon een dood zonder betekenis zijn – daarenboven was dit het einde van de weg van de mogelijkheid.

Vivere la vita

De laatste avond dus. Een jonge, standvastige man: begrijpt gij wat ik met u gedaan heb? – Nu reeds eer het geschied is zeg ik het u. – Een van u zal mij verraden. – Waar ik heenga kunt gij mij niet volgen. – Zult gij uw leven voor mij geven! Waarlijk – . – De vrede die mij eigen is geef ik u. – Dit geschiede opdat de wereld zal begrijpen dat ik de vader liefheb en doe wat hij mij geboden heeft. Staat op, laat ons van hier gaan.

Communità nuova

Is de held in dit eeuwig, bruut eenvoudig drama “het lam Gods dat de zonden van de wereld wegneemt”? Beheerst door trouw tegenover een voorvoelde mogelijkheid. In die zin van God, in die zin een offerdier, in die zin een verlosser. Een jonge man, standvastig in zijn overgave aan het leven, die de weg van zijn mogelijkheid zonder zelfmedelijden of behoefte aan compassie tot het einde toe gaat overeenkomstig de bestemming die hijzelf gekozen heeft – ook de gemeenschap offerend wanneer de anderen niet volgen, een nieuwe gemeenschap binnen.
